SP JAIN APTITUDE TEST FEB 2ND 2008

January 25th, 2008

This post is to answer all the queries and doubts that you may have regarding the SPJAT.1. Firstly, it is a PAPER BASED test and not a computer based test as it was in the last intake.

2. The paper is divided into various sections which will be based on the areas that we test you on

3. Areas that we test you on would be broadly - Quantitative, Verbal, Logic, GK

4. The test is for ONE hour from 12 noon to 1 pm

5. Total marks - 100. There would be NEGATIVE MARKING and this would be taken into account while calculating your total score

6. There are NO SECTIONAL CUT OFFS - we expect your OVERALL SCORE to meet out cut off

hope this has clarified your doubts.

Thanks.

EVALUATIONS - MAY 2008

January 31st, 2007

Hello all of who have been shortlisted for evaluations.

A hundred questions racing through your mind about what you are going to face on that day.

I am hereby elaborating the stage by stage Evaluation process.

Firstly you have to carry all your relevant documents IN ORIGINAL AND ATTESTED COPIES OF THE SAME.

RECOMMENDATION LETTERS ARE NOT NEEDED.

Please ensure that you have paid your Evaluation fees of Rs. 2500 by the deadline mentioned in the call letter.
Dress code for the Evaluations is Semi-formal/formal.

Men may wear a shirt and trousers and a tie or blazer is optional

Women may wear western formals - shirt and trousers/skirt and scarf/blazer is optional or they may wear Indian Formals - salwar/churidar kameez or saree

Kindly avoid extremely casual wear like jeans, shorts , t-shirts etc

The entire process lasts about 6 -7 hrs as there are alot of you who need to be evaluated and it is a step by step process.

However it will NOT carry over to the next day so you may leave the same day itself.

Students opting for the morning slot may take flights/trains leaving post 6 pm and those opting for the afternoon slots may schedule their flights/trains post 10 pm. Incase you are only able to book earlier flights or trains you need to inform the staff at the evaluation venue of your departure timing so that they may help you complete all the stages in time.

Pls note SP Jain cannot arrange for accommodation for any student. All of you will have to make your own stay arrangements incase you plan to stay for more than a day.

Incase you are unable to attend the Evaluations, for any reason, you may reschedule the same by simply sending an email to sejal.shah@spjain.org,
mentioning your inability to attend this time and to kindly consider you for the next round of evaluations.

PLS NOTE THAT RESCHEDULING YOUR INTERVIEW WILL NOT IN ANY WAY BE HELD AGAINST YOU and it is perfectly fine if you do so, but just make sure you inform us about the same.
After keeping all these points in mind I shall now explain the Evaluations process

Stage 1 - Essay/Case study

You would be required to write 2 Essays mostly based on your personal experiences and you would be given 20 mins for this.

There would be 1 case study which will be situational and you would be given 20 mins for this.

So total time for Essay/case Study would be 40 mins

You would be sitting collectively or all together for the Essay/Case study stage

Stage 2 - Group Discussion - 20 mins
You would be given a topic - general issues in the Indian or Global context - a group of about 8 students usually opting for the same specialisation are put together for the discussion.

Our panel would be assessing the students on the same.

Stage 3 -Panel Interview - 20 mins
Students would be interviewed in groups of 3-4 or individually by our panel.

Pls note that the order of the Panel Interview and Group Discussion are interchangeable ( either one may happen first)

Stage 4 - Personal Interview - 10 mins

The final stage is the personal interview stage. This is a one to one interview with our President.

Some students may face only the panel interview while others may face the Personal interview as well. This selection is done on a random basis and does in no way indicate your chances of being selected or not.

Once you have completed all the stages you may leave. Your status will be updated on our website within 3 weeks. You may check the same by clicking on the following link :

http://www.spjain.org/evaluation_login.asp

Hope this has helped in easing your anxiety about what you are in for during the Evaluations.

Pls do not hesitate to call or email us or post your queries on this blog incase of further clarifications.

Thank You,

Shweta Chhabra

MAY 2008 INTAKE

January 20th, 2007

Hey all you SPJain Dubai/Singapore aspirants!

I’m sure all of you have hundreds of questions running through your mind. Please feel free to ask us any and I mean ANY question/query/doubt that you have, however silly you may think it is.

We are here to help you and it is always better to get it straight from the horse’s mouth than ask around and get half the information. As they say half the information can be dangerous.

So you may use this forum to post your queries, or you may send us an email at gmba@spjain.org or you may call and speak to us on 00 91 22 3290 6596/ 97 and we would be happy to solve your queries.

On reading through the threads (both official and the ones formed by yourselves) I find that a lot of you have a lot of small queries mostly regarding our admission procedure, about your chances of getting an offer and about placements and whether it would be worth your while to invest nearly Rs 15 lacs and what would be your ROI, what is the reputation of our institute ,is it at par with SPJIMR, Mumbai or any of the other top B-schools etc.

As prospective SPJain Dubai/Singapore students it is only understandable that you would raise these issues.

I have tried to answer each and every query posted on the official thread in the best manner possible. If by chance I have missed out any one of your individual queries pls repost the same or email or call us.

Through this post I aim to solve all these doubts that I have mentioned above and I hope that you will not be running around for information trying to find other sources to help you out.

OUR ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE

Step 1: You submit your application online or courier the hardcopy to us. There is NO APPLICATION FEE and NO DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

Step 2: On submission of the form you should receive an email from us giving you your application no. and acknowledging receipt of your application. Incase you DO NOT receive the same or are facing technical difficulties in submitting the online form, you need to send an email to our tech dept at helpdesk@spjain.org and mark a copy of the same to gmba@spjain.org

Step 3: If you are shortlisted you should receive a call letter from us. Pls note that this procedure takes 30-45 days from the time you submitted your applications. So pls stop getting worried u guys. If you do not hear from us by then you may check your status online. If you are still confused you may call us or email us at gmba@spjain.org. Your application could result in one of the 3 possibilities: CALLED FOR EVALUATION, WAITLIST or REGRET. We update our website with your status periodically, so pls check the same before calling/emailing us.

Step 4: Aptitude test – Pls note that we will not review applications that do not have a score. You may submit your application without a score if you wish but it will be assessed only once we receive a score from you. So as soon as you have a score on you pls update us about the same by sending an email to gmba@spjain.org and we will then review your application. Our LAST aptitude test date for the May 08 intake  is 1/3/08. You need to check our website regarding details about the same. The aptitude test is like any MBA entrance test. We test you on our Mathematical and Verbal ability as well as Logic and GK. There are multiple choice questions with negative marking. Please understand that it would take us atleast a week’s time to declare the results which would either be updated on our website or emailed to you individually.

Step 5: Evaluations – If you are one of the few who are shortlisted for evaluations, it would consist of Case study, essay, Group discussion and Personal Interview. The evaluations would only be held in Mumbai and if you are shortlisted a call letter would be emailed to you. The outcome of the evaluation may result in any of the 3 possibilities: OFFER, WAITLIST or REGRET. Only offered students receive emails from us. Every students status is updated on the website. Pls view your status before getting worried but you also need to understand that it would take us atleast a week to 10 days to make the final decision and till we can update you of the same.

Step 6: Students who are waitlisted need to be patient and try and understand that we cannot take a decision on them immediately. Obviously they are falling short on certain criteria so we have waitlisted them. We periodically review our waitlist and take decisions on them accordingly. PLs refrain from sending us repeated emails or making too many calls. You may check with us once or twice that is fine. If there is a change in your status you would be intimated accordingly.

Step 7: Offered students will have to make an initial deposit payment by a certain date which would be intimated to them on their offer letter.

ENTRY CRITERIA

Most students have been sending me their profiles and asking me of their chances of getting into SPJain. So far I have individually commented on each of them, however please note that everyone is free to apply and take the chance. But yes we have certain entry standards that students should be fulfilling.

I will quickly run through what we look at in an application:

Academics are important to us, we would need students to have atleast first class ALL throughout their academics

Work experience- while we prefer students who have work experience we would also be willing to consider fresh graduates with outstanding academics

Entrance test score – for CAT the cut off is 80 percentile and GMAT 650+ and our aptitude test 75 percentile. Pls note that we DO NOT base your admission only on the basis of you’re entrance test cores, as a lot of students say but I had 89 in the aptitude test, yet why wasn’t I selected? The entrance test score is just one part of your application and our entire decision cannot be based only on that, we will look at all the other criteria as well. If you have more than 1 score you may inform us about all, we will select the best one. PLs note that submitting a low score will not hamper your chances of being selected, if you are found fulfilling all other criteria except for the entrance test score, we will ask you to give us another score or take our aptitude test to improve on your low score.

Achievements and Extra curricula – these are also important to us as they give us an idea of how well rounded the candidates personality is.

So we have a holistic approach towards a students profile and each and every factor is closely looked at before finally shorltisting candidates. The entire package is important to us not just a single criterion.

PLs note that students who have not completed their graduation and are in their final year of their degree may apply for the DEC 08 intake as we will look at students who have completed their graduation.

That’s about it for now. I think I have explained everything regarding admissions pretty explicitly. And that is all you need to know at this stage. With regards to placements, we have already updated our website, which I’m sure all you have read and found useful and informative. I will be giving you more data in my next post.

I will keep updating all of you with these posts as and when appropriate, for eg info about our accommodation etc will be put up separately at a later stage.

For more info or if your still confused pls check our website www.spjain.org. it contains all the info you need. Infact I urge all of you to read it carefully before applying and to regularly keep checking it as it is updated regularly.

All right I will end this post now, see you later and all the best with your applications!

Thank you

PLACEMENTS INFO

January 4th, 2007

Placements are a very important criteria in a student’s mind when he chooses the Business School he wants to go to. Keeping in mind the queries raised by students through mails and going through the various discussion threads on S P Jain - Dubai/Singapore we have come across a lot of common questions being raised by students. We felt it best to address these through the notice board and the same are as under.

S P Jain – Dubai/Singapore (SPJDS) has had a 100% placement record since its inception with its batch of 2004-05 and subsequently with its batch of 2005-06 as you all know. Details of this are on our website under the placements head. To elaborate on this, for the batch of year 2005-06 the break up of India and Overseas salaries for your ready ref is as follows:

Average salaries

Stream India   Overseas

IB        8.02    14.75

WM      8.23    12.21

RM      6.18     10.32

SMM    7.53     10.48

IT       7.40     13.13

In one off cases students do opt to take up assignments on their own in such cases the salaries could be below the batch average the reason being totally individual as the job profile/company profile may be exceptional in the student’s mind.

Another question raised by many is why two intakes? The reason being that company’s need people through the year and due to this SPJDS can cater to the industry needs through the year.

A connected question then is that student nos. keeps going up, so how will SPJDS deal with placements? The answer to this is that SPJDS will increase the recruiter base and secondly also see same companies recruiting more number of students as we have more specialization talents to offer from. Also placement would now be out of Dubai, Singapore and Mumbai giving us a wider base where locations go.

Some students have queries about the work culture in Dubai/Singapore as to whether being Indian would lead to any racial bias? Both countries are totally modern in their outlooks and a huge diversity of nationalities is to be found in both cities. Companies that believe in diversity of work force tend to keep a balance on nationality, some times. This is not a racial bias but more of a need base. Similarly some of the companies dealing with large govt. accounts prefer employees from the region as they are able to communicate effectively in the local dialect and are more conversant with the local rules and regulations.

Due to confidentiality reasons, there is only so much information on placements that we can disclose to students and we do hope you understand this. It is not that we do not want to share the data but companies who have recruited our students do not wish us to do so.

We do hope this has answered many of your questions.
